A lightly opinionated list of my recent reads.
Best of the Best
You don’t need me to tell you this is fabulous; it won the freaking Pulitzer! (Only the 2nd graphic memoir to do so, after the equally extraordinary Maus.) READ MORE
This is, by a mile, the best book I’ve ever read. I first listened to this on audio on a long drive and at one point, I gasped out loud. I arrived home with about 20 minutes of book unread and while I did actually consider driving around the neighborhood until I finished, I couldn’t […] READ MORE
All Books:
Read this for a queer book club I just joined. Young lesbians in Australia, each making inexplicably bad decisions. Story flips back and forth between the two main characters as teens and adults. The ending proved divisive among the book-clubbers, but I quite liked it. READ MORE
A slim but necessary volume, finally directing our attention to the neglected wife glimpsed on the sidelines of The Odyssey. READ MORE
Yet another entry in the Books I Should Have Read Long Ago series. What finally got me to crack it open—besides the extremely readable new translation by Emily Wilson—was finding Margaret Atwood’s book about Penelope, which I read next. READ MORE
Sarah Longwell is a smart political commentator, a lesbian, and a recovering Republican—perhaps not in that order. This book, published in 2026, should be relevant for many years as we try to repair the rifts in our social fabric. READ MORE
The tranquil life of a small town in upstate New York is upended when rich gay men not only start buying houses, but one of them runs for Mayor. Funny and satirical. A good summer read. READ MORE
In an under-resourced maternity ward in Ireland during World War I, a nurse and a doctor (yes, a woman doctor!) fall in love READ MORE
You don’t need me to tell you this is fabulous; it won the freaking Pulitzer! (Only the 2nd graphic memoir to do so, after the equally extraordinary Maus.) READ MORE
I read this book thinking that a friend had recommended it. When I told her, “I really enjoyed it—it’s so funny,” she looked at me with grave concern. Turns out she had recommended I Regret Almost Everything, which is, to be fair, almost the same title. I enjoyed the writing so much I continued down […] READ MORE
I went on a sort of World War II kick this summer. Loved the intertwined plots and the gorgeous prose of this story of two young people caught in the war. READ MORE
